Lunar rovers were used in the Apollo J Class missions. Each rover cost a little more than $300,000, and they have a launch fee of around 6 between 7 million dollars. We spent around an additional 30 million total U.S. dollars in cost overrun.
On a positive note, lunar rovers are electric cars. Gas money saved! Basha!
On another positive note, NASA has done a lot for us. If you like longer golf shots, Nascar, vacuum cleaners, frozen meals, or television. Then NASA has done something for you. I don't disagree that NASA hasn't helped us, but I do find it overrated and entirely too expensive.

Have you ever lost someone to cancer? Or do you know someone with cancer?
You may seen one of my most recent posts on a kid I know named
Dale who has cancer. In 2006, AACR (American Association for Cancer Research) awarded $6.8 million dollars to direct research funding for cancer. NASA's budget for 2006 was approximately $16 billion. See the difference?
My Point:We can't find the cure for cancer, yet we are sending people into space.

11 million children die before the age of five from hunger.
800 million people go to bed hungry every night.
One third of deaths are related to poverty.
The Apollo program to put men on the moon had a final cost product of around $135 billion 2005 U.S. dollars. $100 can buy seeds for farming or enough to buy over a thousand cups of rice. $250 can buy fluids for children that are suffering from cholera. Simply imagine what a portion of that money we spent on Apollo could do for us and for them now.
It's true that NASA has done wonders for us, but I don't think it should be number one on our priorities. True, our life style isn't perfect at the moment. I just don't think that going into space is going to improve that lifestyle a great amount. As a personal opinion, the money is needed elsewhere.
Note: If you have evidence showing that any of my research is faulty. I would appreciate it a great amount if you would let me know. Thanks.

Firstly, I love the new layout! More structured
And in regards to your post - I think too much money is spent on a LOT of things, one of them being NASA - when that money can be spent on more beneficial things. But that's me. People will surely disagree with my viewpoint.
@VersaGratis - Thanks. I really like my new look as well. I had been wanting to get away from my last one, but just never did. I'm not that talented when it comes to Xanga Themes, so this was a fairly successful experiment. :)
I expect to get some disagreement from this post. Which is why in the last paragraph I stated that it was my opinion. ;)
What are some of the other things you think we spend too much on?
@CrazyKey123 - Let's see... political campaigns, for one. Ha! That makes me laugh.
I have written a post about this before!
I agree with you completely.
It's wasteful, and the money could be much better spent.
I've said the same about our defense budget; if we could learn to play nice we wouldn't need to spend so much!
I definitely agree. I've thought this for awhile.
If we are to survive as a people in the next hundred years, we ought to start populating space but you are right, cancer is the #1 killer according to the WHO and its been proven that stem cell research is the key to begin understanding it (not solving it). I say blame Congress for being too conservative.
@VersaGratis - Political campaigns are really pricey in the U.S. But those don't come out of government funding do they? Because if they do then that is truly ridiculous. And even if they don't, it's still pretty crazy.
I never really was a big fan of NASA. Good post!
Agree! There is way too much money being spent for things while other, more important things are slightly neglected if not entirely neglected. It is quite sad that many people are without food, clothing, and shelter while so much money is spent on things like going to space and political campaigns. It's just sad.
I feel that too much money is spent on the entertainment industry. Do people really deserve millions of dollars for running around on a field, tackling other men in an effort to get a ball? Do people really deserve millions of dollars for acting like someone else in movies? I guess I would take the money if I could act or play sports, but I think it's ridiculous. I also agree that political campaigns are a huge waste of money.
@CanadianConspiracy - @TiRocKiinPiinK - It's good to know I'm not the only person who feels this way. Thank you both for recommending this post as well. :)
@flann00 - Thanks a ton, doll. It took me well over an hour of solid research for this post. I was proud of myself at the end of it though. Do you have any idea how hard it is to research NASA?! Most boring subject of all time.
@iStephanieMarie - I actually never really that big of a problem with NASA until I sat down and really started thinking about it. That's when I came to the conclusion, that I almost completely opposed NASA as a whole.
@casmarie - I agree. It's so sad that it is almost disgusting really. I really would love to sit down with a corporate admin from NASA and see if he could shed some light or change my mind on this subject, but quite frankly. I don't think he could.
@Saryyy - Really good point. I hadn't thought of the entertainment industry to be a huge waste of money. I guess it's because I enjoy films so much, but I definitely get where you're coming from with that, doll.
@Adamission12 - Exactly. I made a presentation on this a few weeks back to a group of around 50 people. A guy named Joe said after I was done that we needed to continue on with NASA and possibly try harder, because we wouldn't want places like Russia to get ahead of us.
You're absolutely right, and hopefully the government (and people in general) will get their priorities straight one of these days. Oh, and don't even get me started on the cost of political campaigns. It's outrageous.
This is true...where are people's priorities anymore?
And I def agree about getting more money for cancer research. My grandmother died of cancer and it is still hard for me but there is so much that needs to be done to advance the field and save lives from the horrible disease.
Agreeeeed. =]
I'll just start off by saying that I am big supporter of space flight and flying in general and that I have a deep seated distrust of the medical profession, so you can make of what I have to say whatever you want since I am definitely biased here.
I believe manned space flight has helped improve our lives in millions of ways that we never think about and unmanned flight has helped in thousands of other ways. Then there is the aeronautical research that NASA has done since before their inception (NASA's first A is Aeronautics and the NASA forerunner was the NACA- National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics). I won't get into things that have come out of NASA programs and research both because it would likely bore you and because I would never be able to come up with a complete list which would actually irritate me. Also, most US Space flights since the early 1980's have had large goal of advancing scientific research in one field or another, including pharmaceutical research. I don't know all of the reasons but something about the microgravity is often advantageous in helping scientist figure out ways around problems that can stymie them on earth. Thus, I support continued space flight, though I do agree that it often costs too much but then what in the government doesn't?
Also, now that man has been to space you will never be able to stop people from wanting to go back and trying to go back. Heck, people were constantly trying that long before the necessary technology existed. Space flight as with all other flight is a desire written on the human heart.
I agree but I doubt things will change much. The government will always put the "needs" of the US first before worrying about other nations. That's just how things are unfortunately.
I agree with you. The US spends too much money on what isn't truely that important. I mean I don't understand why more diseases and other problems aren't cured yet...Oh wait that's right all these Hollywood Stars are taking all the money as well as everyone else that is Rich in the world.
how crazy is that. they splurge on little space cars, but when your country is in destress over all the dept the banks made, they don't want to fork out a few billion to save the economy?
Good valuable points
I read somewhere that the US government spends one billion dollars a year on earthworm research.
