  • Not another post about Michael Jackson, I swear.

I was first planning on blogging today about how Nestle chocolate bars have really been ticking me off lately, but when I went to the farm and was rummaging through the local newspaper, I saw something interesting.

An old friend of mine cut off all of his hair recently since he is joining the army. I remember almost two years ago now, we were sitting around together and we made a bet about who would have the longest hair by 2010. It appears I'm going to win this bet, but now, I'm not sure if I want to.

I have a few friends in the Navy. One of them being female and she had always had her hair cut pretty short, so when she joined the Navy, they really just gave her a trim. Females in the Navy have their hair just an inch or two below their ears. But she told me the story of a girl who joined that had a mohawk, and they G.I. Janed her.

What's the shortest you've ever had your hair?

When I three years old, my Grandma cut my hair extremely short, almost bald, and it wouldn't grow back. But when it finally started, it began growing right up the middle. So that's how my hair was for almost two or three years. When I was voted for Homecoming in my Kindergarden class, I walked out on the stage with another little boy named Michael is a red dress and brunette mohawk. Talk about cool.

What an awesome thing to do. Though I think it's utterly bogus that any sort of job at all has restrictions as to hairstyle. I believe it to be a violation of our civil rights and right to free expression.

shortest for me was at birth..bald and probably one of the ugliest babies you'd ever see...seriously. we were premature and looked mentally challenged for a couple of years. then..for a couple of years in high school i had shaved really short on one side and in a diagnal down past my nose on the other ...thought i was punk/skater...haha even though i barely skated. lol.not a good look on me.  it's been long ever since.

"not another post about michael jackson, i swear"  ROFL

Haha, I like the title. I got on here and was like there will be a million blogs dedicated to MJ.

Anyway! Aw, I'm happy he donated his hair. I love when people donate their hair for good things like that. My hair has never really been long, so the shortest it's been is slightly past my chin.

  • OwenHiggins

but he's done what every man does when he's in denial about long hair.  He gave himself a bob.

I had long hair once...  I blame all the booze.  I don't know what I was thinking.  Never again,  not even when its all gone from the top.

I think he should have been shot for having hair like that.  court martial'd.

I cut my hair short in January, and that's the shortest I've had it since I was a little kid. Actually, it was probably longer even then (except when i was a baby and all). In a way, I miss long hair, but I love my shorter hair.

I'm glad he donated his hair, though.

    Well done! :)

I cut my hair short during my eight grade year for Locks of Love. I think it's great what your friend did!

  • dhwescott

I bet he's going to miss that lock~!

Females in the Army only have to have their hair above their collar... which means you can have long hair as long as it's secured in a bun, braid, french roll, etc. that doesn't hang below your collar.  However, in solidarity I cut my hair pretty close to a crew cut before I joined the Army... made it easier to deal with then.

@abilene_piper_lg - it's not so much a civil rights issue in the military as it is a safety issue.  Long hair, beards and such interfere with the fit of the gas masks and getting them to seal properly... I faced the same issue as a firefighter.  As long as my long hair didn't interfere with the seal of my SCBA, I could keep it.  Plus if you all look alike in the military, it tends to breed cohesiveness- which is a good thing.

    I'd love a mohawk. :P

    I kid. Haha.

Anyway, that guy in the news clip is quite brave, I must say! That's a lot of hair to chop away for the army. I've never had really short hair... It has always been rather long. I mean, I've definitely had boy cuts, but not to the point of baldness for sure!

  • Kilkennys_Pub

The shortest I even had, the USMC barber on Paris Island 12/12/83 to it to the skin. It has been short ever since (but not quite that short)

  • TheCheshireGrins

I think that's great that he donated to Locks of Love. I donated my hair about 2 years ago and after that is when I had the shortest hair. I had my hair cut into a bob just below my ears.

  • pinkmojomama

What a great thing to do, donating to locks of love.  Very good cause.

OMG when I was in high school, Pat Benetar was all the rage and I cut my hair SHORT like hers.  That is the shortest mine has ever been.  Memories...

  • my_final_username

I had my hair quite short sometimes especially in the summer months.

  • youngvan

I had waist length hair as a child. Then a hairdresser chopped it all off and gave me a pixie cut. Not cute when you're 8. My own cousins didn't recognize me and I was often mistaken for a little boy since I wore my brothers hand me downs. Ugh.. worst year of my little life!

  • SimplyNita

I've actually been thinking about getting a haircut but I don't think I'm ready to get rid of my hair just yet.

@abilene_piper_lg - No it's not. The military has a dress code that is pursuant to it wanting to keep the image of its soldiers in the places where they represent the military, either as combat units or as envoys...clean and civil.

It's no more or less a civil rights infraction than when a job that you apply to mandates a uniform.. or the code of ethical personal practices to which medical professionals are bound.

That means no grungy long hair, no messy facial hair and not many external mods.

If you don't like it, it's as simple as not joining the military or going for whatever other job has those requirements.

Besides, you're federal property once you sign yourself over as a soldier. Instruments of policy have no rights.. other than what the civilians who care about the troops contest the government, their owners, for.

SO.. if you want the right to keep your hair, lobby your legislature, en masse, to afford soldiers some kind of "at ease" amendment. It's not likely to be changed on an indefinite basis, but if its that important to you, you might be able to get it changed as applies to times of military leave.

  • mathematicalbagpiper

@DarkYangofICE - I'm a teacher. Dress code is very relaxed. One of the reasons I chose the profession and you couldn't force me to be military, period, end of story.

  • Danth

Seeing as how I am bald on top and shave the sidewalls... it doesn't get any shorter! Ha!

  • sarahflorida1085

the title caught me, i've been thinking the same thing all day.

i've never had the desire/guts to get my hair shorter than shoulder length, i just don't think i could pull it off well.

  • icapillas

I have the shortest hair when I was in junior high school, as in boy's hair, tapered at the back & sides! My mom asked the hairdresser to cut it as shortest as possible (bec she likes me in short hair) & I cried buckets of tears after it.

  • LolainAZ

That's awesome. My niece has alopecia, so my sister's and I always grow it long then chop it off. Like Angie when I was in high school having the middle of your head cut really short and spiky was popular...and the short Pat Benatar  has SOOOO cool. My parents back then would not let me do that type of hair since I was a PK and went to a Christian High School....but I did it anyways and ya know what?? I turned out ok hahaha! That's a great cause!

  • Manstration

    Right now, it's boy short.
